Hackers Can Manipulate Your WhatsApp Images – Change The Settings Now!!
Well, if we look around, we will find that Android is right now the most used mobile operating system. Since Android is right now powering the majority of the new smartphones, it’s also a prime target for hackers. Every other day we hear about new hacking attempts targeted towards the Android mobile operating system.
Recently, the security researchers from Symantec have demonstrated a new vulnerability in WhatsApp and Telegram affecting Android users. Security researchers of Symantec reported a new security flaw known as ‘Media File Jacking’ affecting only Android users.
According to the security firm, the security flaw exposes WhatsApp and Telegram media files on an Android device, and it could be manipulated by hackers as well.
Media File Jacking
Alon Gat, the software engineer who reported about the ‘Media File Jacking Flaw’ went on to explain the reason behind this flaw. The security expert said that the Media file jacking flaw happens due to a slight delay. He is referring the delay between the time when WhatsApp & Telegram receives the files and the time when they write the media files to the disk, and the time when the files are loaded in the app’s chat interface.
This delay between the time allows hackers to ‘intervene and manipulate media files’. This poses a serious security risk because hackers can alter the files after they reach your device. Hackers can manipulate personal data like photos, videos, sensitive docs, invoices, etc as well.
Here’s a demo clip shared by Symantec where a person sent a photo of two friends, but the recipient’s device with malware installed on it received the photo where the two faces were replaced by that of actor Nicolas Cage.
