The study indicating that having an iPhone or iPad is an indicator of wealth which was published by economists at the University of Chicago. In order to obtain such conclusions, data from 1992, 2004 and 2016 showing the trends of society were crossed.

For example, in 1992 having an automatic washing machine was a sign of wealth. Already in 2004, the tendency to say that someone was rich was to buy a car. In 2016 the trend has “turned” to the iPhone and even to the iPad as shown in the following image.

The researchers used data from Mediamark Research Intelligence and resorted to machine learning algorithms. Another conclusion they have reached is that “cultural differences” are not increasing over time when it comes to common brands and experiences. The study is available for free, which can be downloaded from here.
