Apple is reportedly set to introduce a new security feature in its upcoming iOS 18 that will allow users to lock individual apps using Face ID.

A new report from MacRumors, citing multiple sources familiar with the development, suggests that this new functionality will empower users to lock built-in iPhone apps like Mail, Messages, Phone, Notes, Photos, and Settings, among others, using Face ID. This not only adds a new layer of privacy and security but also reassures users that their personal information is well-protected.
To unlock a locked app, users would need to use Face ID authentication, which is also expected to work with Touch ID or an iPhone’s passcode.
It is still being determined whether the new functionality will work with third-party apps downloaded from the App Store.
Apple already allows users to secure certain content behind Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. For instance, notes in the Notes app and photos in the “Recently Deleted” and “Hidden” albums in the Photos app. The new security feature in iOS 18 will further expand this capability by allowing users to lock entire apps, even if the iPhone itself is unlocked.
iPhone users have been resorting to Screen Time or Shortcuts to lock built-in apps, but with the new feature, these methods will no longer be necessary on iOS 18, thereby simplifying the process and making it more convenient for users.
Apple is anticipated to officially unveil its next major operating systems, such as iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS 15, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 keynote, which will be held today, June 10th, at the company’s HQ, Apple Park, located in Cupertino, California.
The report added that once the announcement is made at the keynote, the first beta version of iOS 18 should be available for participants of the Apple Developer Program. The final release of iOS 18 for the general public is expected in September 2024.
