Is Apple Working On A Bendable and Foldable iPhone?

We all know Apple recently launched their new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus which is a huge hit in the smartphone market. Just after the launch, rumors regarding upcoming iPhone 8 started to spread on the internet.

Few rumors claim that the upcoming iPhone 8 will be having wireless charging functionality and will be made of “All Glass”. However, according to sources, it looks like Apple is working on an iPhone that can be bend from the middle.

As reported by the site Patently Apple, Apple had managed to get the patent for the bendable mobile screen technology that they have been exploring since 2013. Patently Apple explains that this new patent shows “a perspective view of an illustrative electronic device such as a future iPhone that bends along a flexible portion such as a flexible seam associated with a hinge”.

The patent also throws light on some of the technical details. The technology to create a foldable display is based on conductive carbon nanotube structures that are strong enough to give good resistant to strong pressures and cracks.

The Patent Describes:

“Conductive carbon nanotube paths can form signal paths that are flexible and resistant to cracking.

The carbon nanotube structures may be incorporated into signal cables such as flexible printed circuit cables, rigid printed circuit boards, printed circuits that include rigid portions with flexible tails (sometimes referred to as “rigid flex”), portions of display structures, portions of touch sensors such as capacitive touch sensor arrays for displays or track pads, camera structures, antenna structures, housing structures, internal device structures, electrical components, substrates, brackets, housing walls, other structures, or combinations of these structures.”

One of the materials that can be used in the production of this new device is ceramic. Apple had already showcased Apple Watch Series 2 that is built entirely with ceramic.

While patents are filed all the time. However, the patent doesn’t always make its way to the production. If this production comes out to be true then it would shock the entire smartphone market.
