We all know that CyanogenMod is one of the most popular and most widely used custom ROMs in the Android world. But, recently it announced that they will stop developing further custom ROMs for the Android device.

It’s official, CyanogenMod Is Dead

CyanogenMod is one of the most popular and most widely used custom ROMs in the Android world. This ROM has a set of options and a level of customization that is not found in manufacturers’ stock ROMs.

Unfortunately, this project will end already on 31st December. There will be no more ROMs for Android. Sounds really weird, right and why it should not be.

However, this sad news we got to know this morning. After several rumors, the team responsible for CyanogenMod project announced that it will even end their services and development for Android ROMs (both nightlies versions which were marked as stable).

The source code will remain available to anyone who wants to develop their own ROM.

The CyanogenMod team officially stated on their blog “As part of the ongoing consolidation of cyanogen, all services, and cyanogen-supported nightly build will be discontinued no later than 12/31/16. The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally”.

This is certainly bad news for the Android world because it was the custom ROM which is still most popular among all other custom ROMs (although still get other projects alive).

This project had already reached the stage of maturation and already had a great amount of programmers who were striving to obtain the best possible performance of the several devices officially supported. Although the list of supported devices was not long, there were unofficial versions for many models, obtained by recompiling these ROMs.
