Hacker Who Stopped WannaCry Has Been Arrested!
If you remember, a few months ago the world had faced one of the largest ransomware attacks which go by the name WannaCry. Well, dozens of countries have been affected by the WannaCry attack.
The malicious WannaCry ransomware has spread on more than 200,000 computers in over 150 countries, locking up machines’ data unless victims accept to pay the hackers. At that time, a 22-Year-Old security researcher from @Malware TechBlog had found a kill switch that can disable the functionality of WannaCry ransomware.
Marcus Hutchins who helped to stop the WannaCry ransomware in May 2017, is in US custody after being held while attending the DEFCON security conference in Las Vegas. Well, the reason why he was arrested was shocking.
Marcus Hutchins was arrested by the FBI in connection with Kronos. It’s being said that Hutchins had helped to create and spread Kronos Trojan between 2014 and 2015. Kronos is a banking trojan which spreads through email with attachments like compromised word documents.
A spokesperson from the U.S Department of Justice said 22-Year-Old Marcus Hutchins was arrested for “his role in creating and distributing the Kronos banking Trojan,”. According to the reports from Motherboard, an indictment was filed in Wisconsin District Court which claims that Hutchins wrote Kronos in 2014 and also offered to sell the malware to a user on an internet forum.
Not only this, Hutchins also posted a video which shows the full potential of Kronos Malware. The indictment also claims that Hutchins sold the malware on AlphaBay which is a dark web site that was shut down by a global law enforcement operation in July.
