In an increasingly heated dispute between personal assistants, the tech giant Microsoft wants to make Cortana more efficient. For this reason, the company announced the purchase of Semantic Machines, a startup specialized in conversational artificial intelligence.
The idea is to allow Cortana to have more natural dialogues with users. According to The Verge, the agreement can help the assistant understand functions in sequence. Thus, it would be able to give or request complimentary information and construct context from a command.
“Most of today’s intelligent bots and wizards respond to simple commands and queries, such as giving weather forecasts, playing a song, or sharing a reminder, but are not able to understand the meaning or conduct conversations,” the tech giant Microsoft said.
The Semantic team has long-standing experts in artificial intelligence. Some of them worked on the development of Google Now and Siri. They should also contribute to improving the robots of the Azure Bot Service platform.
“We seek to deliver powerful, natural, and productive experiences that take conversational computing to a new level,” the tech giant Microsoft said.
The company did not disclose how much it paid for Semantic but said it intends to establish a new artificial intelligence centre near the startup headquarters in Berkeley, California.
By focusing on conversational artificial intelligence, the tech giant Microsoft signals the desire to take a step forward with Cortana.
Like Siri and Bixby, the wizard has lost space to its correspondents from the tech giant Google, which recently introduced the Duplex, and Amazon, which stands out for the number of commands available for third-party services.
