Samsung is planning to launch 5-inch foldable smartphone next year. This smartphone when unfolded will make the display size to 7 inch. This smartphone could be also used as a tablet. Samsung’s executive clarified that a foldable handset would begin mass production by the end of this year and will be available in 2017 as per reports from Korean News Portal, ETNews.
Samsung May Launch 5-inch Foldable Smartphone Next Year
The report states that Samsung including its display manufacturing unit, Samsung Display has joined hands with numerous manufacturers to implement the idea of a foldable smartphone and make it reality. Moreover, this smartphone is said to come with OLED displays.
An Industry Source told ETNews “Although mass-production cannot be concluded hastily since Samsung Electronics still has few other major tasks to complete, I’ve heard that Samsung Electronics had made considerable amount of results in the time being,”
Samsung has been in the news for the fodable smartphones. The Korean giant, officially addressed the development of foldable OLED displays in January but without a recommendation of the foldable smartphone.
Director of Samsung’s Display division, Lee Chang-hoon said “Development of Foldable OLED is taking place according to our plan. We are planning on mass-production and release of this product by discussing with our partners.”
However, it is not new for the Samsung to use OLED panels for its foldable displays and they have used that displays in curved HDTV’s, Galaxy S6 Edge and S7 Edge.
Rumors state that this curved display might be the Galaxy S8. However, there is no reference of the foldable display linking to Galaxy S8.
