We all know very well that the giant chip maker Intel had always dominated the PC and SoC market from past long years. However, now according to the latest reports, the South Korean giant Samsung overtakes the giant chip maker Intel as world’s biggest chip maker after long 25 years.
Samsung Overtakes Intel As World’s Biggest Chip Maker After 25 Years
After 25 years in the lead, the giant chip manufacturer Intel was surpassed by the South Korean giant Samsung in annual semiconductor sales revenue. The South Korean giant Samsung is now officially the largest chip maker in the world.
In 2017, the South Korean giant Samsung’s semiconductor business had revenue of $69 billion, while the giant chip manufacturer Intel has made $62.8 billion over the same period.
It was a record year for the giant chip manufacturer Intel, which had a 6 percent increase in revenue, but it was not enough to keep the top spot – which it had held since 1992. By the second quarter, it had already been outdated.
It is not difficult to understand what happened. While the giant chip manufacturer Intel has ceased making CPUs for smartphones, while the South Korean giant Samsung provides the processors for its own handsets only.
In addition, it manufactures components – such as memory chips – for other companies. In fact, the South Korean giant Samsung says its fourth-quarter profit was “driven by the component division, with the largest contribution coming from the Memory sector manufacturing DRAM and NAND.”
However, the giant chip manufacturer Intel’s processors are on 90 percent of the world’s computers, a sector that has grown little in recent years – and AMD has been struggling to gain space on PCs. In fact, recent times these two rival companies have teamed up simply to provide Intel Core processors with AMD Vega graphics chip.
In 2017, the South Korean giant Samsung had a total profit of $50.7 billion, pulled especially by the semiconductor division as well as screens – it made enough money to manufacture the iPhone X OLED display.
