We all know very well that the Tor network, as many of you may already know, has always been characterized by offering a greater level of security and privacy to the users who make use of it. However, recently, a security researcher has discovered a critical flaw which can leak your real IP address.

WARNING: This Critical Tor Browser Vulnerability Leaks Users’ Real IP Address

The Tor network, as many of you may already know, has always been characterized by offering a greater level of security and privacy to the users who make use of it, in fact, this is the main reason why it was initially put into operation and now It is already used by millions around the world.

However, just a few hours ago there was the talk of a recent discovery that is warning users of Mac and Linux systems, that the browser used to access this anonymous network, Tor Browser, could be revealing the real IP addresses of users due to a critical vulnerability that filters this data.

In this way, the possible attacks could be done with the IP of Internet users when they visit certain types of web pages, something that you want to avoid at all costs, as it is logical.

It is something that has been discovered by the Italian security researcher Filippo Cavallarin, saying that the vulnerability resides in Firefox and eventually also affects Tor Browser, since the privacy service that allows users to browse anonymously through the web uses Firefox in its core, as many of you will already know.

Well, this vulnerability called by the researcher as TorMoil, affects the Tor browser mentioned for MacOS and Linux, not for Windows, but taking into account the security and privacy of the users of this network, the details about this ruling have not yet been publicly disclosed.

Update Tor Browser as soon as possible to avoid this critical vulnerability

Cavallarin, CEO of the security firm We Are Segment, privately reported all of the developers of Tor, so these have been launched immediately to correct the error, in fact, as we just knew, and they have released an emergency update of version 7.0.8 of Tor. In this way, they have just released Tor Browser 7.0.9 for the users of the two affected systems and fixes this critical security flaw that filters the IP address.

It should be mentioned that TorMoil is activated when Internet users click on the links that start with the “file://” addresses, instead of the usual “https://” and “http://”.

Therefore, as it has been announced, “due to a failure of Firefox in the handling of URLs “file://”, it is possible in both systems for users to filter their real IP address. So once an affected user in MacOS or Linux navigates to a web page such as those mentioned, the operating system can connect directly to the remote host by bypassing the Tor Browser.

At this point, at the moment, it is best to update the browser to the newly released version and thus prevent possible risks related to privacy on the Internet.
