WhatsApp, the popular Meta-owned messaging platform, is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow users to replace mobile numbers with usernames and pins for their accounts for added privacy.
WABetaInfo, a known WhatsApp tipster publication, discovered the new feature in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.18.2 update, which is available on the Google Play Store.
For those unaware, WhatsApp is already working on a feature to set up a username, which was reportedly tested in WhatsApp beta for the Android 2.23.11.15 update in May 2023. This feature will enable users to choose a unique and memorable username for their accounts in the future. Although this feature is still being developed on Android’s WhatsApp beta, the social media giant is further improving this feature by adding PIN support.
This advanced username feature with PIN support enhances phone number privacy. It eliminates the need to share your phone number and allows people to contact you on WhatsApp through your username, enabling greater flexibility in managing your privacy experience.
“It is important to note that people who have your phone number will continue to see it, but you can opt to use your username to start new conversations in the future,” says the WABetaInfo report.
To further strengthen and add an additional layer of privacy, WhatsApp is also developing an optional PIN code feature for usernames, particularly for people you are interacting with for the first time.
“You will be able to choose a PIN of at least four digits that you are comfortable sharing with others, but this should never include private information, such as your two-step verification code. As a way to limit unwanted messages, other people will need to enter your PIN before they can contact your username for the first time. Once the PIN is set, users will have to share it with those they want to connect with. However, it’s worth noting that people in existing conversations won’t need to use the PIN,” the report added.
The details regarding the advanced username feature with PIN support are under development and will be available in a future app update.
