What is the Deep Web?

Over the years, we have seen technology becoming smart and advanced; right now, machines can dive into the depths of the oceans to find unknown creatures. For example, humans have built machines that helped to find the remains of the Titanic. But the ocean is endless, and there’s much to discover in the bottomless oceans.

If we relate the above example to the digital world, machines are the search engine crawlers that haven’t identified various parts of the internet yet, and that untouched part is termed as Deep Web.

Normally, the websites that you find on the Deep Web restrict the search engine crawlers from crawling and indexing the web pages. However, the deep web isn’t as mysterious as it sounds. A Private network, or website, tagged as deep web, can be right next to your house.

The deep web is just the internet that isn’t within reach of search engine crawlers. For example, the site you visit to download the latest movies and TV shows usually hide their network from the search engine to avoid legal penalties. So, this is what we call the Deep Web.

What is Darknet?

Darknet is different from Deep web. It’s a network built on the top of the internet. Darknet has been explicitly designed for anonymity, and one such darknet is Tor or The Onion Router.

Usually, people use Tor for anonymity, but Tor has numerous hidden websites and services that we can’t access on the regular internet. Tor powers these websites and services by using the ‘Tor Hidden Service Protocol’. Not only that, the sites that are only limited to the Tor network have .onion extension.

Friend-to-friend is another example of the darknet. F2F network is a kind of peer-to-peer network in which users only make direct connections with people they know. To authenticate the connections, Passwords or digital signatures are used.

In short and simple words, the Dark web is the World Wide Web of darknets like Freenet, Tor, etc. Let me explain, the surface web is anything that a search engine can access, and the Deep web is anything that the search engine can’t access.

Dark Web

The dark web is a small part of the Deep Web that has been intentionally hidden and is inaccessible through standard internet browsers. It’s usually a darker part of the internet and is known for its anonymous marketplaces that often sell illegal products like drugs or weapons. You can also term the Dark web as the black market of the internet.
