Google on Thursday announced that it is shutting down its standalone app, Google Pay, in the United States (U.S.) on June 4, 2024, to enhance user experience by simplifying its payment apps.

“Google Wallet continues to be the primary place for people to securely store payment cards used for tap and pay in stores, alongside other digital items like transit cards, driver’s licenses, state IDs and more,” the company wrote in a blog post.
“To simplify the app experience, the U.S. version of the standalone Google Pay app will no longer be available for use starting June 4, 2024.”
Google Pay, which has been largely replaced by Google Wallet in the U.S. and is used five times more than the Google Pay app, will continue to retain the most popular features, such as tapping to pay in stores and managing payment methods.
After June 4, 2024, Google Pay app users in the U.S. will no longer be able to send, request, or receive money from others through the U.S. version of the Google Pay app.
Further, users can use the U.S. version of the Google Pay app until June 4, 2024, to view and transfer their Google Pay balance to their bank account. Also, users can continue to view and transfer their funds to their bank account after June 4, 2024, from the Google Pay website.

In addition, users in the U.S. who were using “find offers and deals” in the Google Pay app when shopping can now go to the newly launched deals destination on Search, suggests Google.
Although the Google Pay app will retire in the U.S. on June 4, 2024, the service will continue to operate as usual in India and Singapore, which means users can send or receive money and pay bills, among others, like usual.
“For the millions of people who use the Google Pay app in India and Singapore, nothing will change as we continue to build for the unique needs in those countries,” the company added.
