Earlier we felt that only food and some other stuff have expiry dates, but now Apple has followed the same strategy as the Cupertino giant announced that iPhone have a life expectancy of three years. But it is not going to be as you think, it is something different.

Apple while addressing its new environmental policy also addressed the question about the life expectancy of Apple device. The company said that the iPhones have a life expectancy of three years including Apple watch and the Apple TV devices expire in four years.

“To model customer use, we measure the power consumed by a product while it is running in a simulated scenario. Daily usage patterns are specific to each product and are a mixture of actual and modeled customer use data. Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for OS X and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices,” said Apple.

The company further added “That doesn’t mean we expect the product to last only three years – the three years is an assumption of years owned by first owners (not including the iPhone getting handed down or traded in, etc. etc.) in order to measure/assess Product Greenhouse Gas Life Cycle,”

Apple unveiled iPhone SE last month which is quite similar to iPhone 5s, which can be upgraded to the upcoming iOS updates coming in three years, which the iPhone 5s will not get. Older hardware of Apple devices are presently being provided compatibility by Apple.
