Man Tricked Facebook & Google Into $100 Million Phishing Scam
If we look around, phishing scammers largely target students, small business or sometimes professionals who are unaware of such tactics. However, it will be hard to trust that even tech giants like Facebook and Google faced trouble due to the phishing scam.
Way back in the year 2013, a Lithuanian man tricked employees of two major tech companies into wiring over $100 million to the bank accounts that he controlled. Now, the two victim companies are identified as Google and Facebook. According to the reports from Fortune, Both of the companies paid out more than $100 million.
Well, Evaldas Rimasauskas was arrested on fraud charges for tricking employees of Google and Facebook to give away $100 million in the period between 2013 and 2015. Evaldas Rimasauskas has been charged with wire fraud, money laundering and identity theft for which he is supposed to face 20 years prison time.
Acting attorney Joon Kim said “From half a world away, Evaldas Rimasauskas allegedly targeted multinational internet companies and tricked their agents and employees into wiring over $100 million to overseas bank accounts under his control,”
Google spokesperson said in the statement that the company had “detected this fraud against our vendor management team and promptly alerted the authorities”. Facebook spokesperson told MailOnline “Facebook recovered the bulk of the funds shortly after the incident and has been cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation”
