Sailfish OS Becomes Russia’s Official Mobile Operating System

Russia has in recent months sought to free themselves from other countries software dependency. Its war against Microsoft and the search for local solutions, based on open solutions, has made shake the relations with the United States.

But a new front is about to be opened, with the certification of Sailfish OS as the only mobile Operating System that can be used by government entities. In this way, they can free themselves from the tech giant Google’s mobile operating system Android.

It was Jolla, which is the creator of Sailfish OS, it announced its great step in Russia. This operating system is now the only one who is allowed to be used in the future project within the government and related entities.

Certification of Sailfish OS will allow the Russian government and government agencies to reduce their dependence on systems controlled by foreign countries, something that Russia seeks to eliminate. Sailfish OS actually is based on open source Linux kernel and Jolla’s open source Mer Core UI and other 3rd party components and Sailfish OS are also compatible with Android OS, as it enjoys a natural upper hand over other Android alternatives.

Hence, this major certification will apply for a new Russian version of Sailfish OS, which is being developed by the Russian company Jolla and OMP. These works have lasted for 18 months and result on par with the developments that are being made in the original version of Sailfish OS, which is the basis of what is being developed by OMP.

The willingness of Russia to free itself from external software takes another major step in which Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android are now out of Russia’s choices, something that was intended earlier.

However, currently they do not have any plans to introduce new devices for Jolla, but the fact is that very soon in Russia they will develop new smartphones as well. After several projects which were less well achieved, the Jolla and its Sailfish OS could be a major revitalization in Russia. Apart from this big win in Russia, Jolla is also discussing alternative mobile OS possibilities in India, China and South Africa.
