The update from skype was based on the feedback given by Skype users and Microsoft seemed to have listened to them. The New Update lets you view the status of a person on the chat screen like, we can view that is he/she is online? and if not then we can see his last seen details.
The new update has also brought back the native sharing capabilities of the app. This means you can now directly share your messages, or links or any media files directly from your chat screen to other apps installed on your phone same as what we see on some chatting apps like WhatsApp.

So, they decided on adding new themes and improving the interface of the chat screen that would enhance the use of the application to users. Other major updates include bug fixes to delete contacts and conversations and using other apps while you are in a call.
For now, the updates are available for both iOS and Android devices and also on the web-version of the skype. It is known that, the version of the app was released on or after July 12. Keeping in mind that you can only witness the new features only if you and your Skype contacts have the latest version. So, that means if you simply have updated the app but your skype contact friends haven’t updated then that won’t work. Both of you, have to have the latest version of Skype installed then only you can try the latest updates.
