On Tuesday, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) Inc. announced a slim, smaller version of its current gaming console, PlayStation 5 (PS5).
Sony PS5 Slim To Be Released In November
“As the holiday season approaches, we are excited to share that we have a new PS5 model launching. To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility,” the blog post announcement reads.
While it has been referred to as the PS5 “Slim” by the gaming community, Sony chooses to call it the “new PS5 models” – the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. These will have the same technology as the current PS5 and the overall volume has been reduced by more than 30%. Also, the weight of the disc drive model has been reduced by 18% and that of the digital console by 24%, in comparison to the previous iterations (PS models).
The new Sony console features 1TB of internal storage for the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition, enhanced from the 825GB of the original PS5. Those who purchase the PS5 Digital Edition can add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive separately at a later date.
The disc drive, which is required to play disc games on the new PS5 Digital Edition, is sold separately for $79.99 / £99.99 / €119.99 / ¥11,980. On the other hand, the standard PS5 model will come with the Blu-ray Disc Drive.
Further, four separate cover panels make up the new PS5’s outer case, where the top side covers have a glossy look, while the bottom one has a matte finish.
In addition, Sony will add a horizontal stand in the new PS5 model, while a new Vertical Stand compatible with all PS5 models will be sold separately for $29.99 / £24.99 / €29.99 / ¥3,980.
Starting this November, the new PS5 models will be available in the U.S. at select local retailers and on PlayStation Direct. It will continue to roll out globally in the following months.
Also, starting in early 2024, a variety of PS5 Console Cover colors for the new model will be available, including an all-matte Black colorway and the Deep Earth Collection colors in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver. The PS5 Console Covers prices will start at $54.99 / £54.99 / €44.99 / ¥7,480. Additional colors will be released in the future.
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive will cost $499.99 / £549.99 / €479.99 / ¥66,980, while the PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at $499.99 / £449.99 / €389.99 / ¥59,980.
Sony says that the new version of the PS5 will become the only model available “once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out.”
