The camera maker RED is making a mystery about its first smartphone, the Hydrogen One, RED simply describes it as “the world’s first holographic media machine”.

RED CEO Jim Jannard announced a partnership with Leia Inc., a company that leaves HP Labs, for the smartphone screen. It specializes in creating holographic displays for mobile devices.

The media site TechCrunch explains that Read (yes, like the princess of Star Wars) uses light field technology, stacking an LCD display and a backlight pointing in different directions. By combining these light angles by projecting the images onto the screen, 3D effects appear visible to the naked eye.

Leia calls its technology “diffraction light field backlighting”. Jannard says in a statement that RED Hydrogen One will use a holographic format called H4V (Hydrogen 4-View) to render 4D content on-screen.

The 5.7-inch screen on Hydrogen One promises to display 3D objects from different angles, depending on where the user is. For example, says The Verge, a map app could show a model of a city with buildings coming out of the screen. You could then interact with them through gestures, not necessarily touches on the display – Leia has partnered with Synaptics to do so.

We’ve already seen some smartphones (like HTC Evo 3D) and even portable consoles (hello, Nintendo) with 3D screens. The innovation here is to keep traditional 2D features unchanged: you can switch between the two modes, and the display will change the backlight accordingly.

We saw an example of this technology during the Mobile World Congress in 2015:-

Marques Brownlee, known for the channel MKBHD on YouTube, was able to test a prototype with the holographic screen beforehand. It creates a “crazy, deep and 3D-like look,” but that “definitely is not perfect” due to light leakage at the edges of the screen and some gagging.

There is still time to perfect the screen, of course. The launch of Hydrogen One is slated for the first quarter of 2019. RED still does not reveal the processor, storage, RAM or camera specs, but already puts it in pre-order just for $ 1,195.
