Scientists Found ‘Time Crystal’ In The Unlikeliest Place

A team of physicists from Yale University has recently discovered the indications of the existence of a “time crystal”, yes, you read it right, a ‘time crystal’, inside a “normal” crystal.

The conventional crystals have their atoms arranged in very stable patterns and that are repeated again and again in the three spatial dimensions. In time crystals, however, the atoms also move in a pattern that repeats itself, although it does so in time, and not in space.

Following a temporal (rather than spatial) pattern implies that the atoms of a time crystal never settle into their ground state, which conventional crystal atoms do.

Therefore, the “normal” crystals remain immobile, since they are in equilibrium and in their fundamental state. But the crystals of time continue to oscillate even in their ground state. Hence, they never reach equilibrium and, literally, they cannot remain still.

So, until now, it was assumed that time crystals could only be formed within crystals that have more ‘internal disorder’ between their atoms. But, basically, a nuclear magnetic reverberation of mono-ammonium phosphate crystal quickly gave the signs of what they were looking for.

Here is what the leading investigator of the research, Sean Barrett stated: “Our crystal measurements looked quite striking right off the bat,”. Moreover, the leading investigator of the research, of course, I am talking about Sean Barrett who stated: “Our work suggests that the signature of a discrete time crystal (DTC) could be found, in principle, by looking in a children’s crystal growing kit.”
