This Server Might Be Older Than You, Won’t Survive This Year

Well, technology is advancing at a rapid pace. Now smartphones come up with 6GB of RAM. However, some old computers still stand firm at their places since decades. Lots of things have changed in past 24 years, but one thing hasn’t.

It was not a computer but a data server that was running since 1993 without unplanned downtime. The old server was built by Stratus Technologies and was set up by an IT application architect Phil Hogan in the year 1993 at Great Lakes Works EGL.

The server was developed to be used in a variety of uptime-dependent connections, including in industrial applications, as well as payment processing. The server was last modernized in early 2000’s, most of the parts of the server have been swapped out with spares obtained from a third party.

The data server was recognized in the year 2010 when Stratus Technologies ran a contest to find their oldest operating servers in the World. Phil Hogan’s server was 17-year-old at 2010 and won the competition.

Phil Hogan said “It never shut down on its own because of a fault it couldn’t handle. I can’t even think of an instance where we had an unplanned shutdown”. However, it’s all about to come to an end because this year in April the server will be upgraded with a brand new system.
